Nice to Know

Filed under: What's going on — Old School Band @ 9:34 pm

We do lots of weddings, and get lots of complements, but it’s always nice to get it “in print”. This just arrived from a wedding Ceilidh we did at Samlesbury Hall in April.

We just wanted to say a BIG THANK YOU to The Old School Band for supplying the entertainment for the night do at our wedding (10/4/10). All our guests said what a wonderful time they had. Weve got some fantastic memories and photo’s of the Ceilidh. It was exactly how we had imagined it and helped make our day so perfect.

What can I say ? Q.E.D.

Royalist Moi ?

Filed under: What's going on — Old School Band @ 10:25 pm

So you steam into the herd of fillies, cut yourself out a piece of breeding stock with perfect fetlocks, and away you go..

No, we’re not talking the well hung stallions guide to species survival, but Courtship and marriage for our Royals, it were good enough for “Big Ears”, with the Sloan Rangers, evidently good enough for Prince Wills and Middle Class Uni babes..

So where does our Band come into this ? Well any Uni north of Lancaster has regular Ceilidhs, much loved by students, and fondly remembered by graduates, we should know, we’ve done many wedding functions for them.

Also, I remember a Royal documentary where the Queen was bopping along to a Ceilidh, with the Tune “Davy Davy Nick Nack”. Hey Brenda, we can play that, give us the gig, after all it’s OUR dosh, not yours.

So if you’re planning your wedding, the only cool reception function in 2011 will be a Ceilidh, book now

Oh dear, I hope I don’t get beheaded for treason !!

Serious Note

Filed under: What's going on — Old School Band @ 2:58 pm

Alas, once upon a time a customer would phone us, and arrange a date, a transaction we could trust, mainly

.The old parlance for someone playing one band against another would be a “Timewaster”. We might even have compared notes on such people with other Bands in our Ceilidh Fraternity, We have a healthy rivalry, but we do coexist very well too.

Now it seems that due to the ease of traffic on the Internetr, several bands may be promised the  same business, only for at least one to be let down.

Don’t forget, we are giving up our weekends for little money to do your gig, try hiring 5 plumbers on a Saturday night !!

In order to protect ourselves, and to safeguard your bookings at the same time, we will only proceed on a booking gained via our Website when a deposit (non-refundable) has been received, a promise is no longer enough.

Upon receiving your deposit, we will send a receipt which constitutes a binding contract with the Band. We regret having to do this, but needs must.

Cosmic Revelations

Filed under: What's going on — Old School Band @ 3:59 pm

Woah, Heavy ! We’re the Old School Band, and we’ve just done a gig at The Old School in Croston ! So, just think “Old School, we’ve just done a gig there, we’re a Band”, so not only are we The Old School Band, …..oh never mind !!

Yes siree, it’s an Old Schoolhouse in the grounds of the Church in the Historic part of Croston, recently converted for functions, smallish, but excellent for small to middling functions,we loved it even though we had to go over a ricketty racketty bridge like the three Billy Goats Gruff (Remember Them ?) to get our gear in. But yet anotrher successful wedding gig for us.

If you want tickets for Sunday 31/10/10, you can go to

 That’s all for now.

Scary Stuff

Filed under: What's going on — Old School Band @ 1:59 pm

Wot’s “Trick or Treat” all about ? It seems to me to be all about scaring old folk, and dressing up like a Mass Murderer, and as for recession, how come all the stores are full of elaborate costumes that can only be worn once, anyway, if you fancy it, we are doing a Halloween Ceilidh at the Horse and Bamboo, Waterfoot from 3.00 to 5.00pm, on Sunday 31st October, it’s for children mainly, and there is also scary storytelling, all are welcome.

Meanwhile we’ve been all over doing weddings and birthdays from Hindley to Troutbeck, and stages in between.

Random Musings

Filed under: What's going on — Old School Band @ 5:00 pm

Before I joined a Ceilidh Band, I thought a “Burns Night” was some kind of Hospital A&E ex patients reunion, but no, it was an annual event in January for us at the Calf’s Head Worston, also at Arnold School Blackpool.

Anyway we were at Worston’s finest on Saturday for a wedding. Well known for the quality of Bar Food, and drink, we are proud of our reputation there.

It’s a pity the weather put paid to this year’s Burns Night, and we are doing RAF Leeming next year,a bit of an adventure to be sure, I hope they put a Night on at Worston anyway.

If you can get to Waterfoot on Halloween weekend, we are doing a children’s party again at the Horse and Bamboo, more details to follow next Blog

Big Hog Rides Again

Filed under: What's going on — Old School Band @ 6:32 am

Yes, it was more guilty munchings (see my last blog) last Saturday at Samlesbury Hall with a hog roast buffet at the wedding.

Next night it was a private party at Grimsargh Village Hall. Both Grimsargh and Goosnargh have fine village Halls, causing a little confusion sometimes (yes I turned up at the wrong one once).

Another excellent venuewe are doing on Saturday is Mawdsley Village Hall

We have done most Village Hall  venues in our wide catchment area, so if you want to book us, why not do so, then ask our advice about a venue.

If you are unsure, or worried about space for your dancing, fear not, a good team,  with our experience can cope with most situations, Bob or Dave can happily discuss your needs.

Phil,

PS another booking for next year received,to secure your Summer Wedding Ceilidh  it really makes sense to DO IT NOW

Hog Wild

Filed under: What's going on — Old School Band @ 7:16 pm

Yet another successful wedding at Rivington Barn last Wednesday, we like it there because the sound is great !

In  a Marquee, the sound gets lost, as opposed to bouncing off oak beams, and the like, and the dance floor is really big.

One thought though, we seem to see a lot of “Hog Roasts” this year, very delicious indeed, but as a lapsed veggie, I’m sure I’m going to meet “Big Hog” in a nightmare saying “You’ve eaten all my chidren, now prepare to die”

Phil,

PS my last blog worked, we’ve been booked for next July at a wedding at Samlesbury Hall, feel free !!.

Where have we Been ?

Filed under: What's going on — Old School Band @ 9:29 am

I know cynics out there (Hello Rog) think no news is because we’re “doing nowt”, but it’s not true, we’re on our usual round of End of Term, Weddings Cultural Exchanges etc, This Saturday we’re in a Marquee on a Scout Camp for a wedding, cool huh ? well you can guarantee when we do a “Tent” God lets rip with a hurricane ! Ah the joys of an English Summer !!!!

Phil

PS we’ve had to tell a lot of people that we’re already booked on the date required, this can be a big disappointment if we played at your sister’s wedding, or your own wedding 10 years ago, Remedy :- BOOK EARLY, Ideally you should book NOW for Summer 2011, I know the future,s uncertain financially , but you can book your cake a bit later and get in touch with us now !!!

In which we reach the heights

Filed under: What's going on — Old School Band @ 9:05 pm

Yes, it was oxygen mask time again on Saturday for our third time at Walmersley Golf Club near Bury, perched high on the hills with incredible views over the valley.

To be honest you don’t expect Golfers to enjoy folk dancing do you ? but the gig gets better every year, and a capacity crowd danced all night and made many kind appreciative comments.

I think if the Music is good, and the caller can put over the dances to perhaps a sceptical first time audience, people can forget their built in predjudice (teenagers and heavy metallers excepted) and have a good time.

I only speak for the Old School Band, here, not all Ceilidh Bands, try us and you won’t be disappointed.
